DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 20 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa is expected to hand over a total of 109 houses on Friday, Dec 20 to victims of the devastating mudslide that claimed 89 lives and left many others injured and homeless in Hanang District, Manyara Region.
Chief Government Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa announced this during a press briefing in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, stating that the construction of the houses was funded by the government in collaboration with various stakeholders.
“Tomorrow, December 20, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa will hand over 109 houses to the victims in Hanang. The government decided to construct these houses because the mudslide buried everything, leaving them without shelter,” he said.
The devastating mudslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, caused extensive damage and displacement in the affected area.
To mitigate further challenges, the government has also prioritized the provision of social services, particularly ensuring access to clean and safe water, to prevent the outbreak of epidemic diseases.
The deadly landslide occurred in early December 2023.
In response to the disaster, approximately 4.75 billion Tanzanian Shillings were raised to support the victims in Hanang District, Manyara Region. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
