Guatemala warns of risks for migrants on border with Mexico

GUATEMALA CITY, Dec 15 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex) of Guatemala warned about the risks of transiting through some places on the border of the state of Chiapas, Mexico, attending to recent insecurity.

The Foreign Ministry released a communiqué telling locals to be cautious, in the wake of some civil society organizations recording incidents that particularly affect migrants and other visitors in that region.

In certain cases victims were subjected to rights violations, the ministry stressed, adding it collaborating with the Mexican government to strengthen border security and protect the rights of people.

Both nations share the commitment to deal with challenges posed by criminal groups in the region, by prioritizing measures that promote the protection and well-being of communities, it added.

Through the Consular Network, the ministry added, we will continue to monitor the situation and provide assistance to Guatemalans who need it, reaffirming its commitment to a safe, orderly and regular migration.

Alleged border agents, according to the video images released, had asked vehicles to stop to conduct inspections, but then proceeded to impose illegal charges or threaten travelers. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
