Laos, Thailand Conduct First Joint Kidney Transplant

VIENTIANE, Dec 14 (NNN-KPL) – The successful completion of the first kidney transplant surgery, marked a medical milestone, in collaboration between hospitals in Laos and Thailand.

Laos’ Mittaphab Hospital and Thailand’s Ramathibodi Hospital, agreed to enhance medical care in Laos, particularly in kidney transplants, through joint workshops, training sessions, and the adoption of advanced techniques, Lao national TV reported, yesterday.

The collaboration was divided into two phases. The first phase began in mid-2023, with training to build specific skills for Mittaphab Hospital’s kidney transplant team, covering donor and recipient evaluation, immunology, use of anti-inflammatory drugs, post-operative care, management of complications, infection, and care of patients before and after transplantation.

The second phase, carried out in 2024, involved Mittaphab Hospital and Ramathibodi Hospital, jointly conducting a kidney transplant selection process for a 49-year-old male patient with kidney failure, caused by diabetes and high blood pressure. He received a kidney from his 18-year-old daughter.

The successful completion of their first kidney transplant surgery, marked a significant step forward in medical cooperation between Laos and Thailand, paving the way for improved healthcare services in the region.

Additionally, specialist teams from the two hospitals will establish a joint laboratory, and organise workshops, seminars and conferences to support future kidney transplants at the Lao hospital.

The hospitals also agreed to hold discussions and draft memoranda of understanding (MoUs) for each area of cooperation.– NNN-KPL
