RAMALLAH, Thursday, June 14 (NNN-WAFA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Riyad al-Malki, announced today the accession of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Palestine-chaired Group 77 & China.
He said the permanent mission of Azerbaijan in the United Nations had sent a letter to the State of Palestine in its capacity as Chairman of the Group of 77 and China for the year 2019, expressing its wish to join the group.
Al-Malki welcomed the accession of the friendly Republic of Azerbaijan to the group, calling on other developing countries to join the largest international bloc representing the peoples of the developing countries the international community.
He said Azerbaijan’s accession to the group is an indicator of the success of the State of Palestine as Chairman of the Group, and a step towards achieving the objectives Palestine aspires to during its mandate, including enhancing the Group’s status by having more developing countries on its board.
Al-Malki called on all developing countries to join the Group, saying this would better represent their issues and concerns in international forums by making them the issues and concerns of the group as a whole.
The Foreign Minister pointed out that the noble goals and lofty ambitions of the Group can benefit all countries and peoples of the world.
Palestine assumed the presidency of the G77 & China by an overwhelming vote in October 2018 with 146 countries voting in favor, three opposed (the United States, Israel and Australia), and 15 abstaining was seen as a great advance for the Palestinian efforts to get international recognition.
The vote also elevated the legal status of Palestine at the UN to allow it to lead the largest UN bloc and represent it in all UN forums and events.
