Cold Snap Brings Heavy Snow To Parts Of Japan

TOKYO, Dec 7 (NNN-NHK) – Japan is experiencing a strong cold snap today, with heavy snowfall reported in northern and eastern regions, particularly along the Sea of Japan.

Snow is also expected in mountainous areas of western Japan, including Kyushu and Shikoku, through Sunday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Strong cold air and a winter pressure pattern have brought the lowest temperatures of the season to many areas. By 7:00 a.m. local time, Sapporo recorded minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, Morioka minus 3.0 degrees and Aomori minus 2.4 degrees. In central Tokyo, the temperature dropped to 6.3 degrees.

Heavy snowfall has accumulated in some regions, prompting authorities to warn drivers to use winter tires, and stay updated on weather conditions. The beginning of the winter often sees a spike in accidents, due to inexperience with snowy roads.

Meanwhile, intermittent rain is affecting lowland areas in the Hokuriku region and Niigata prefecture. With heavy rain already recorded, Niigata has issued landslide warnings in some regions, requiring heightened vigilance.– NNN-NHK
