BAGHDAD, Dec 7 (NNN-NINA) – Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, met separately here yesterday, with Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Bassam Sabbagh, to discuss the escalating situation in Syria.
Al-Sudani and Araghchi discussed bilateral relations and developments in the region, particularly the situation in Syria, according to a statement by al-Sudani’s media office.
Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s official and steadfast position, in support of Syria’s unity, security, and stability, emphasising the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, the statement said.
The Iraqi prime minister also stressed his country’s commitment, to continuing intense diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis in Syria, it noted.
A separate statement said that, when meeting with Sabbagh, al-Sudani highlighted Iraq’s continued political and diplomatic efforts, to maintain security in Syria, which is considered a key factor in the security of regional countries.
Al-Sudani also urged “neighbouring Arab nations, to coordinate their efforts, in addressing regional challenges, particularly the current developments in Syria,” the statement said.
Also yesterday, Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, held a trilateral meeting with Araghchi and Sabbagh, to discuss the deteriorating situation in Syria and its consequences on neighbouring countries.
A joint statement issued after the meeting said that, the three ministers shared concerns about the impact of the serious situation in Syria on the three countries, noting, its threat to the security of their peoples and the entire region.
The statement condemned all forms of terrorism, as well as, the ongoing Israeli attacks on Syria, Gaza, and Lebanon.
It also emphasised respect for Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.
In a joint press conference after the meeting, Hussein said that, Syria’s security is linked to the security of the region, stressing, “We will call for an urgent meeting of the Arab League at the ministerial level, and we will use all diplomatic means to reach a calm in the Syrian situation.”
For his part, Araghchi told the press conference that, the international community must support the region’s efforts against terrorism, especially in Syria.
Sabbagh said that, terrorists are violating the resolutions of the United Nations and the UN Security Council, and the Syrian army is doing its duty to repel the terrorist attacks.– NNN-NINA
