TRIPOLI, Dec 5 (NNN-XINHUA) — The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said it has been making intensified efforts in order to revitalize the political process and move towards the holding of national elections in the country.
Over the past few days, Stephanie Koury, the officer-in-charge of UNSMIL, held meetings with senior Libyan officials in this regard, the UN mission said in a statement.
Koury held meetings with Speaker of the eastern-based House of Representatives (HoR) Aguila Saleh, President of the Presidency Council Mohamed al-Menfi, Acting Foreign Minister Taher Al-Baour, and Minister of State for Political Affairs and Communications Walid Ellafi.
The talks covered the unification of the state institutions, particularly the executive authority, and to enable credible elections, as well as the importance of establishing a unified budget for the upcoming year.
They discussed the need to break the current political stalemate and pave the way for elections “on a legally and politically viable basis,” according to the statement.
“She also urged all interlocutors to halt the adoption of unilateral measures that are deepening the fragmentation of Libyan institutions,” the statement added.
Libya has been suffering political instability since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The country is now divided between two main rival administrations: the eastern-based government, backed by the HoR, and the western-based government in Tripoli, supported by the Presidential Council. — NNN-XINHUA
