DAR ES SALAAM, Nov 17 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — Five people have been confirmed dead, and 42 others have been rescued following the collapse of a commercial building in Kariakoo, Dar es Salaam, on Saturday.
Providing an update to journalists on Saturday evening, Inspector Peter Mtui, who is overseeing the rescue operations, stated that efforts to recover those trapped in the rubble are ongoing.
“Rescue operations have been underway since we were alerted. So far, we can confirm that five people have lost their lives, and 42 others have been rescued,” Inspector Mtui said.
He added: “Various leaders have come forward to support the citizens. Rescue operations are still ongoing.”
Following the tragedy, President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her condolences and wished the injured a swift recovery. She urged citizens to remain calm as authorities work tirelessly to rescue those trapped.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa conveyed the President’s message during his visit to the scene on Saturday afternoon to oversee the rescue operations.
“The President sends heartfelt regards to all the victims of this tragic incident. Our deepest sympathies go to the victims, their families, and the Kariakoo business community,” he said.
The Prime Minister called for public cooperation to allow rescue and security teams to continue their operations without hindrance. He also commended the rescue teams for their significant efforts and assured the public that operations would continue effectively and efficiently.
In the wake of the disaster, President Samia directed authorities to collaborate with Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) to ensure that survivors receive the necessary medical care for a swift recovery.
