SANTIAGO, Nov 12 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Chile and Vietnam signed cooperation agreements in the fields of agriculture, defense, culture and trade on Monday, during President Luong Cuong’s visit to this South American nation.
Luong and his Chilean counterpart, Gabriel Boric, witnessed the signing of the documents at a ceremony held at the La Moneda Palace, where ministers and officials from both governments were present.
The memorandum of understanding between the Ministries of Agriculture allows for the establishment of a mechanism to address the challenges of climate change, promote agricultural development and food sustainability.
In area of defense, the Chilean and Vietnamese ministries will explore different cooperation mechanisms and exchange experiences in peace operations.
Meanwhile, the Ministries of Culture penned an agreement for 2024-2026 that provides for cooperation in creative cultural industries and in the training of artists, among other issues.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Vietnam and the General Directorate of Export Promotion (Prochile) also agreed to promote relations in this area.
During the first semester of 2024, bilateral trade reached 803.6 million dollars, which accounted for an increase of 1.7 percent compared to the previous year.
President Luong Cuong, who is on an official visit to Chile, was received by Boric, with whom he held a bilateral meeting to strengthen political and economic ties.
A decade ago, the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Chile and Vietnam came into force, and with it that nation became our main trading partner in Southeast Asia and the twentieth worldwide, Boric recalled.
Luong, in turn, stressed that the purpose of the visit was to reaffirm “the importance and desire of Vietnam to further promote the comprehensive partnership with Chile, one of its most important partners in the region.”
“Although economic relations have made great progress after the FTA, there are still possibilities and opportunities for further development,” said the Vietnamese leader, who also expressed his belief that ties will continue to expand in accordance with the aspirations of the two peoples.
This is the first visit here by a Vietnamese head of State in the past 15 years, after the one made by Nguyen Minh Triet in 2009. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
