SANTIAGO DE CUBA (Cuba), Nov 12 (NNN-ACN) — As part of the Action Plan of the United Nations System (UNS) to help the people of Cuba, the first of four flights with basic supplies valued at more than USD 600,000 arrived in this city thanks to a joint effort by UNDP, FAO, PAHO and UNICEF together with the European Union (EU).
Funded by the EU with the support of the UN Humanitarian Response Depot, managed by the World Food Program, the flights will bring 94 tons of medical supplies, water storage tanks, hygiene and tool kits, chlorine tablets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, solar lamps and other materials to contribute to improve the living conditions and the health, water, sanitation and hygiene systems affected by recent hurricanes in Cuba.
Beatriz Johnson, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and of the Council of State and first secretary of the Party in the province, thanked the aforesaid international agencies on behalf of the Cuban people.
Meanwhile, a Venezuelan ship carrying 300 tons of medical supplies and construction materials arrived Sunday in this city, which Orlando Miguel Maneiro Gaspar, ambassador of the South American country to Cuba, described as an act of solidarity with the victims of recent destructive weather events in the eastern and western provinces of the island and conveyed a fraternal message from President Nicolás Maduro and his government to the Cuban citizens..
“This gesture is the greatest expression of humanity and brotherhood that characterizes both peoples who, along with their leaders, are always ready to lend a hand in order to overcome any adversity together”, said the diplomat.
Beatriz Johnson, first secretary of the Communist Party in the province, referred to this aid as a sign that Cuba is not alone and thanked Venezuela’s contribution on behalf of her people. — NNN-ACN
