Uruguay: Distribution of ballot boxes for Sunday presidential elections completed

MONTEVIDEO, Oct 27 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The operation to distribute ballot boxes for Sunday’s general elections in Uruguay has been completed.

The president of the Montevideo Electoral Board, Mary Lopez, confirmed that the Armed Forces distributed the suitcases with the ballot boxes, in addition to the 133 electoral lists and the two plebiscite sheets to be placed in the precincts.

The leftist coalition Frente Amplio or Broad Front, is trying to return to power with the presidential candidacy of Yamandú Orsi, while the ruling party has put Álvaro Delgado on the ballot to succeed outgoing President Luis Lacalle Pou. Both are expected to face each other in a second round in November.

The army has taken responsibility for 47 percent of the ballot boxes, which will be placed and guarded in the more than 7,000 authorized precincts throughout the country.

Meanwhile, the Air Force and the Ministry of the Interior distributed the suitcases containing the electoral material on Saturday.

A total of 2.7 million citizens are eligible to vote on Oct 27 to decide on the Presidency of the Republic and the composition of the Parliament.

They will also vote on two constitutional referendums: one on the possibility of night-time home searches and the other on the reform of the social security system, in particular the pension system. — NNN-AGENCIES
