Guatemala: 8 people killed with almost 200 shots in northern region of the country; 6 killed in bar attack

GUATEMALA CITY, Sept 23 (NNN-TELESUR) — At least six men and two women were shot to death, with nearly 200 bullets, while driving a car in the extreme north of Guatemala, as confirmed by several sources on Sunday.

The attack took place on Saturday in the department (province) of Petén, about 500 kilometers north of Guatemala City, near the border with Mexico, according to local media.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office stressed this Sunday that it is already at the site of the attack, in the municipality of San Andrés, also in Petén, and that they recovered at least 198 “ballistic evidence of different calibres.”

Authorities have said that four people have been confirmed as killed, while “four bodies were not identified” according to a non identified source.

The victims identified are Erick Geovany López Nova, Erwin Oswaldo Portillo Hernández, Alfaro Otoniel García Interiano and Marleny Tamara Arana Cardona.

Also on Saturday morning, but in the department of Quetzaltenango, about 250 kilometers west of the capital, six people were killed in a bar in the municipality of Coatepeque.

According to the Volunteer Fire Brigade, armed men entered the site and fired at those on the scene, killing six people. — NNN-TELESUR
