Kenya: Tension high as man trampled by marauding elephants in Igembe; deceased house also destroyed

NAIROBI, Sept 21 (NNN-KBC) — Tension is high at Akila Ng’ondu village in Igembe North Sub-County, Meru County after an elderly man was trampled to death by an elephant early Friday.

The deceased, identified as Kimani Ntoithabu is said to have been attacked and killed by marauding elephants from Meru National park, destroying his house and killing him instantly.

The said two elephants attacked the victim at around 9am when he was asleep.

According to resident Jackson Kimenchu, Kenya Wildlife Service should be blamed for not safeguarding their animals noting that members of public had already called to give information on the said stray elephants.

Julius Karuti a neighbor to the deceased said that KWS should be held accountable and should take full responsibility of the death.

He appealed to KWS to compensate for the death and destruction and also assist in financing burial of the deceased.

The residents had something to celebrate about after getting free meat after one of the said elephants was shot by KWS officers who responded. — NNN-KBC
