ZANZIBAR, Sept 10 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — SEVERAL Indonesian companies are expected to visit Tanzania soon to explore investment opportunities and expand trade between the two countries.
This was announced by Zanzibar President Hussein Mwinyi upon his return from the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) 2024, held in Bali City, recently.
Dr Mwinyi attended the forum on behalf of Union President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan and subsequently held discussions with various Indonesian leaders.
“There is much to anticipate following the forum.
My participation allowed me to connect with several serious investors and companies interested in investing in Tanzania,” Mwinyi said upon arrival at the Abeid Amani Karume Internation al Airport (AAKIA).
He commended the Zanzibar Investments Promotion Authority (ZIPA) and the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) for their efforts in presenting the investment opportunities available in both Zanzibar and Mainland Tanzania, particularly in the Blue Economy sector.
“Oil and gas exploration is a key area we highlighted.
We have announced new exploration blocks and with the halt in the RAK Gas Company’s onshore project, we are seeking new investors,” President Mwinyi explained.
He also noted the potential for Indonesian investors in the development of a multipurpose seaport at Mangapwani in Unguja North.
“This seaport project offers significant opportunities, handling various types of cargo, including liquid bulk, dry bulk and fish.
We have invited multiple companies to participate due to its expansive scope,” he said.
Additionally, President Mwinyi highlighted interest from Indonesian investors in adding value to seaweed and extracting oil from clove leaves.
“We have much to learn about the value of clove leaves. Indonesian partners are willing to assist us in understanding how to enhance the value of seaweed and cloves through processing,” he added.
He informed journalists that Indonesian teams will soon explore investment opportunities in marine transport, fisheries and other economy sectors.
Dr Mwinyi also noted Indonesia’s success in tour ism, particularly in Bali, which attracts four million tourists annually and its advancements in the oil and gas sector.
“We have also requested Indonesia’s support in developing our tourism industry, especially in local content.
They will help train young people from Zanzibar for managerial positions, as most of the managers in our over 600 hotels are currently from outside Zanzibar,” President Mwinyi said.
Besides participating in the IAF 2024, President Mwinyi witnessed the signing of an agreement between the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) and the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority.
This agreement supports the SADC Pooled Procurement initiative for safe medical supply delivery.
“I had the opportunity to engage with Indonesian leaders, including the Minister for Tourism, as well as representatives from private and public companies.
Most responded positively to our requests and invitations to explore investment opportunities and skill development,” President Mwinyi concluded.
The 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) 2024 concluded with business cooperation agreements totaling 3.5 billion US dollars and 32 business partnerships. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
