WELLINGTON, Sept 5 (NNN-RNZ) – New Zealand paid tribute to the Maori King, as Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, was laid to rest today, after 18 years of leadership.
Maori King Tuheitia, died in hospital on Aug 30, at age 69, while recovering from heart surgery. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.
Tuheitia’s commitment to solidarity will have a lasting impact on New Zealand, according to a government statement.
“Over the last few days, thousands of people have gathered at Turangawaewae from all corners of our country to pay their respects, a testament to the profound impact Kiingi Tuheitia has had, on so many lives,” said New Zealand Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon.
“We reflect on his legacy and look to the future with hope and anticipation,” Luxon said.
Maori Development Minister, Tama Potaka said, Tuheitia was not only a symbol of unity and resilience for Maori, but an advocate of all New Zealanders growing together.
He was dedicated to the advancement of Maori, New Zealanders, Pacific peoples and indigenous peoples worldwide, the minister said, citing Tuheitia’s contributions, particularly in bringing Maori and the government together.
Tuheitia’s daughter, Kuini Nga Wai Hono i te Po, 27, has been announced as the new Maori monarch.
Tuheitia was the seventh monarch in Kiingitanga, or the Maori King movement, which originated in 1858, in an attempt to unite the indigenous Maori tribes, to strengthen their resistance to colonialism, according to local media reports.
Government and public buildings have lowered their flags at half mast in New Zealand.– NNN-RNZ
