Bahamas to send administrative staff before troops to Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Aug 30 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The Government of Bahamas has not yet disclosed the date for the departure of its 150-strong armed contingent to Haiti, and is instead planning to dispatch a so called “administrative mission”.

Bahamas Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell has indicated that as of now the aim is to “deploy administrative personnel” before the arrival of actual troops in Haiti.

The troops are in the pre-deployment phase, waiting for agreements to define the status of the military personnel, so as to ensure their legal protection, Mitchell explained.

“The pending agreements to guarantee the troops’ legal protection remains one of the leading obstacles to this purpose,” the Le Facteur Haiti digital newspaper informed.

Issues such as immunity, conduct, use of force, and what role our men would play in Haiti should be resolved before they arrive in that nation, Mitchell said. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
