SARAJEVO, Aug 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The death toll from a migrant boat capsized in a river on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s border with Serbia on Aug 22 has risen to 12 after locals found another body, Bosnian authorities said.

The accident occurred on the Drina River as the boat attempted to cross the border from Serbia to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A joint rescue operation by the two countries’ rescue forces saved 18 migrants, including three children. Eleven bodies had been found earlier, and on Saturday the body of the 12th victim was discovered by a resident in the town of Tegare.

Since the 2015 refugee crisis, more than 1 million people from Asia and Africa have passed through Serbia, the government said.

In the first half of this year, 10,389 cases were recorded, down nearly 70% from last year, thanks to closer cooperation in border control. The majority of those trying to enter Serbia and then on to Bosnia and Herzegovina came from Syria, Afghanistan, Turkey, Morocco and Pakistan. — NNN-AGENCIES
