Over 100 teams to participate in International Dragon Boat Race

KOTA KINABALU, June 4 (NNN-Bernama) — Over 100 teams are expected to participate in the sixth International Dragon Boat Race at Teluk Likas scheduled from June 14 to 16.

Sabah Chinese Association president Tan Sri T.C. Goh said the so far teams from three countries, namely Brunei, China and the Philippines have expressed their willingness to participate in the race.

“This year, the competition will be held at Teluk Likas and it is going to be challenging because the new area has no grandstand compared to the previous venue,” he said when met after making a courtesy call to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal at the Sabah Administration Centre, Likas today.

As such he said it was necessary to build a new grandstand because the previous race was held at Tanjung Lipat but the depth of the sea in the area was not suitable for the competition.

Goh added that the registration for the nine categories including the TYT and Chief Minister categories which each offered a prize of RM10,000 each was still open.

He said Sabah’s Yang di-Pertua Tun Juhar Mahiruddin was expected to officiate the event.
