Woman Killed, Several Feared Trapped After Building Collapsed In Mumbai

NEW DELHI, Jul 21 (NNN-PTI) – A woman was killed and three others injured yesterday, after a portion of a building collapsed, in Mumbai city.

According to officials, several people are feared trapped under the debris.

The front portion of the four-story building collapsed, near Grant Road railway station, in Mumbai. Police, fire brigade teams, civic body officials and ambulances rushed to the spot, to carry out rescue work.

Officials said, some portions of the building are still seen hanging precariously.

Video footage aired on television news channels showed, locals lifting concrete slabs to rescue a man whose leg was stuck in the rubble.

Mumbai, on Friday, witnessed a heavy downpour, which led to waterlogging on some roads and railway tracks.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials told media that, the building was declared dangerous and a notice was also issued to the residents to evacuate.

Deadly accidents due to failing infrastructure, either new or old, are common in India. Construction experts blame lax administration and corruption for flouting building rules, that often result in using poor quality materials, inadequate supervision and poor safety standards for workers.– NNN-PTI
