Over 90,000 flee homes due to Tripoli fighting: UN

UNITED NATIONS, June 1 (NNN-Xinhua) — The United Nations said that the number of people who have fled their homes because of the fighting in Libya’s capital Tripoli over the past two months has surpassed 90,000.

This week alone saw 8,000 people displaced, said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, citing the UN Migration Agency. Half of them were believed to be children, Haq added.

“Aid workers continue to provide assistance to the internally displaced and to other vulnerable people impacted by the hostilities, with more than 47,000 people in Tripoli and surrounding areas having received help to date,” Haq told a briefing.

Food, water and other essential items are being supplied to newly displaced families while psycho-social support is being provided to conflict-affected children, he said.

The conflict began when the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army began its advance on the UN-recognized government in Tripoli on April 4. — NNN-XINHUA
