UN Chief Appoints New Special Envoy For Iraq

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 16 (NNN-XINHUA) – UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, yesterday, announced the appointment of Mohamed al Hassan of Oman, as his new special representative for Iraq.

Al Hassan, who will also head the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), succeeds Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert of the Netherlands.

Al Hassan brings to the position, a broad range of diplomatic experience, with a career spanning over 30 years working on preventive diplomacy, peace-building and development, according a statement issued by the United Nations.

He has served as the permanent representative of Oman to the United Nations in New York, since 2019, and prior to that, he held various assignments at Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as Oman’s ambassador to Russia and deputy permanent representative to the United Nations in New York.– NNN-XINHUA
