SANTIAGO, July 12 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The National Geology and Mining Service is keeping a permanent watch on the Villarrica volcano, located in southern Chile, after an upsurge in its explosive activity.
During the last hours the volcano emitted gases, particles and fragments of incandescent rocks towards its slopes.
According to the Special Volcanic Activity Report, the ejected material reached a perimeter of 500 meters and the ash column exceeded 600 meters.
The National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response maintains the yellow alert in four surrounding communes: Villarrica, Pucon, Curarrehue and Panguipulli.
The massif, 2,847 meters above sea level, is located between the regions of La Araucania and Los Lagos.
This volcano has a long history of intense eruptions and the last one occurred in 2015, when over 5,300 people had to be evacuated. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
