SHENZHEN (China), June 27 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peruvian Transportation and Communications Minister Raul Perez Reyes indicated that there is great interest in replacing public transportation units with electric vehicles in Peru.
Therefore, he said, establishing an agreement with the Chinese Government for the respective financing is proposed.
The government official reported that Peru’s official delegation in China has met with companies Huawei and BYD —the latter is the world’s largest electric vehicle producer.
“Indeed, there is great interest in replacing public transportation units with electric vehicles. To do so, it is proposed to establish an agreement with the Chinese Government to obtain a financing guarantee line,” Perez Reyes told TVPeru.
“The idea would be that, when they visit us for APEC, this agreement can be signed to replace, in the next three or four years, a significant number of taxi vehicles that circulate through Lima or the 20,000 vehicles, each with up to 25 passengers, known as ‘combis,’” he emphasized.
The minister said his office is working on a bill, together with the Ministry of Economy-Finance and Congress, to waive the import tax on electric vehicles that are intended for public transportation. This includes taxis.
“We have also expressed our interest in putting together a financing package for the acquisition of electric cars to renew taxi fleet in Peru, with the aim of replacing old units,” Perez Reyes said.
Similarly, the renewal of public transportation units, such as ‘combis,’ would be considered.
“We have another meeting planned with the BYD Company to see how this program could be implemented, which would contribute to improving air quality and also to formalizing taxi services and urban transportation, in general,” he remarked.
Perez Reyes explained that, during the delegation’s visit to Shenzhen, the main advances in telehealth, tele-education, data center connectivity, digital medical records, and 5G connectivity were presented to them.
Moreover, Minister Perez Reyes commented that he participated in meetings with representatives of mobile phone manufacturing companies TKD and Honor.
The Cabinet member also met with companies developing security systems, which are interested in the Peruvian market.
“They are going to send a team to Peru to meet with the Interior minister to see how they can support security issues and the fight against crime in our country,” he stated. — NNN-ANDINA
