German Police Shot Man Waving Axe In “Threatening Manner”

BERLIN, Jun 17 (NNN-XINHUA) – Police yesterday shot and wounded a man armed with an axe and a firebomb, in the northern German city of Hamburg.

The man, with the axe in his hand, waved it at police officers in a “threatening manner” in the city’s St Pauli district, according to a police spokesman.

Police officers opened fire and hit the man in the leg. The man is now receiving medical treatment, the spokesman said.

The incident occurred ahead of yesterday’s football match between the Netherlands and Poland, in Hamburg, one of the German cities hosting Euro 2024 matches.

The police said that, early indications suggested “no football connection.”

In another incident, the German police shot to death a man, after he fatally attacked a young man and wounded three others in the city of Wolmirstedt, in eastern Germany on Friday evening, said the police on Saturday.

The man broke into a private football party, where people were watching the televised Euro 2024 opening game between Germany and Scotland, and stabbed three persons, two of whom were seriously injured. The attacker was shot dead later by the police, when he tried to escape and attack the police.

According to the police, before breaking into the private party, the man had stabbed a young man nearby, who died of severe injury later.– NNN-XINHUA
