10 Killed, Five Missing As Heavy Rains Continue In Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Jun 3 (NNN-XINHUA) – Ten people were killed and five others missing, during the past 24 hours, as heavy rains and strong winds lashed out across Sri Lanka, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), said, yesterday.

Most of the deaths were reported from the capital, Colombo, as over 150 mm of rains was experienced since the early hours of yesterday.

The Health Ministry said that, it had instructed all health directors in the provinces, to be on alert and ready for any emergency situation in hospitals.

The ministry said, it had made all arrangements to airlift patients in critical condition to larger hospitals from village areas, as flood worsens.

The Department of Meteorology yesterday warned of heavy rains throughout the country, within the next 48 hours, while the DMC said that, rescue operations were underway.

The public had been urged to stay at home and to avoid going into flooded areas.

The Education Ministry said that, all schools will remain closed today, due to further rains expected.– NNN-XINHUA
