KATHMANDU, Nepal, May 28 (NNN-NepalNews) – Nepali security agencies were on high alert on Monday, during a general strike called upon by an underground armed outfit, suspected of making two bomb explosions in the capital, Kathmandu, that killed four people and leaving eight others injured on Sunday.
Bishwaraj Pokharel, spokesperson of the Nepal Police, said that, security has been stepped up across the country, to avoid any untoward incidents during the general strike.
“We are on high alert following Sunday’s two major explosions,” Pokharel said, adding that, over 5,000 police personnel have been deployed in maintaining security in Kathmandu.
The one-day general strike affected normal lives of people across the country. Main markets, academic institutions, corporate offices and private organisations remained closed, while public transportation was badly affected, due to the general strike, media reports said here.
During the strike, police have defused improvised explosive devices in some parts of the country, which were planted to terrorise people. The cadres of Chand-led group torched three vehicles in Ramechhap, Makawanpur and Surkhet districts.
The police spokesperson said, they were investigating into Sunday’s blasts. The two explosions took place at around 4:30 p.m. local time.
The first explosion took place at a private house in Ghattekulo area, barely one kilometre away from the prime minister’s office, while the second explosion took place inside a hair salon at Sukedhara area.
Addressing a session of the country’s House of Representatives in Kathmandu, the home minister vowed to take action against the perpetrators involved in the bomb explosions in the capital.
“The government is committed to maintain robust security across the country. All those involved in the bomb explosions will soon be arrested,” he said.
The Chand-led group, which is one of the breakaway factions of the former rebel Maoist, has been known for violence in Nepal in recent years.
The group was banned by the Nepali government in March this year, after it was found involved in criminal activities and explosions in different parts of the country.– NNN-NepalNews
