Jordan, Sweden Discuss Efforts To Raise Support For UN Relief Agency

AMMAN, Jordan, May 28 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordan and Sweden, on Monday, discussed efforts to raise political and financial support for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

At a meeting in the capital Amman, between Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, and Anna Hammargren, deputy director general of the Swedish Foreign Ministry, they discussed regional developments and ongoing efforts, to overcome challenges and achieve peace and stability, according to a foreign ministry statement.

The two officials also discussed the implementation mechanisms for the recommendations of the Stockholm meeting held, in April.

The Stockholm meeting focused on the need to address the gap in funding for UNRWA, and the Palestinian refugee issue, within a comprehensive political framework.

The two officials highlighted sufficient support for the UN agency, to allow it to continue playing its role for the Palestinian refugees.

According to the statement, the UN General Assembly will vote later this year, on whether to extend UNRWA’s mandate and garner support, to narrow its deficit of about 200 million U.S. dollars.– NNN-PETRA
