Laos To Improve Management Of Solid Waste

VIENTIANE, May 22 (NNN-KPL) – The Lao government, together with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), has embarked on a comprehensive National Solid Waste Management Assessment, to address the growing challenges of waste management.

The assessment will delve into the current state of waste management in Laos, examining practices, challenges, infrastructure, and regulations, Lao national TV reported, yesterday.

This analysis will pave the way for identifying investment opportunities and formulating strategies, to enhance compliance with sustainable waste management standards, thereby bolstering environmental protection and public health.

Scheduled to run between May and July this year, the assessment will involve meticulous data collection, stakeholder engagement, and the study of best practices. An inventory of disposal facilities, at both the central and local levels, will be compiled, providing a foundation for revising national laws to align with ASEAN’s (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) regional strategies and guidelines.

The workshop, held in the Lao capital, Vientiane on Friday, brought together representatives from the Lao government, development partners, the private sector, and academic institutions, fostering a collaborative network for sustainable waste management in Laos and ASEAN region.

Speaking at the workshop, Director General of the Department of Planning and Finance, under the Lao Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Phakkavanh Phissamay, expressed optimism about the assessment’s potential to improve waste management services.– NNN-KPL
