YANGON, May 8 (NNN-MNA) – A new snake species has been found in western Myanmar’s Rakhine State, according to the European Journal of Taxonomy.
The research finding, which was published in the European Journal of Taxonomy on May 3, was made by a team of herpetologists from Mizoram University in India, the report said.
The newly discovered snake is named Herpetoreas davidi – after the famous French taxonomist, Patrick David, the report said.
The newly discovered species is currently known only from Myanmar’s Rakhine Yoma Elephant Sanctuary, Gwa Township of Rakhine State, a protected area, the report said.
In absence of other biological data to access its population status and potential threat, the researchers suggested that the species should be considered a Data Deficient (DD) species, following the Red List categories of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.– NNN-MNA
