KINSHASA, April 2 (NNN-XINHUA) — Judith Tuluka Suminwa has been appointed as the new prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the country’s presidential office said.

Suminwa, formerly the minister of planning since March 2023, has made history as the first woman to serve as prime minister in the country.

“The task ahead is formidable and the challenges are immense. However, with the support of the President of the Republic and everyone else, we will succeed,” she told reporters.

Suminwa is a member of the ruling Union for Democracy and Social Progress party, which won 69 seats in the 500-member National Assembly, securing its position as the leading party among 44 others in the general elections held in December 2023.

Suminwa obtained a master’s degree in applied economics from the Free University of Brussels. She worked in the banking sector before joining United Nations agencies, including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). At the UNDP, she was a national expert in a community support project in eastern DRC. — NNN-XINHUA
