UN chief, Security Council condemn Moscow concert attack

UNITED NATIONS, March 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The UN secretary-general and Security Council offered their “strongest” condemnations of the deadly attack Friday at a concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow and offered condolences to the victims of the “terrorist” incident.

UN chief Antonio Guterres “condemns in the strongest possible terms today’s terrorist attack at a concert hall outside Moscow, in which at least 60 people were reportedly killed and over 100 others injured,” spokesman Farhan Haq said in a statement.

Guterres “conveys his deep condolences to the bereaved families and the people and the Government of the Russian Federation,” he added.

The Security Council also offered its condolences and urged all states “to cooperate actively with the Government of the Russian Federation, as well as all other relevant authorities” to hold perpetrators and backers of “these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.”

“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack,” their statement said.

The Daesh group claimed the attack on Friday, saying in a statement on Telegram that its fighters had attacked “a large gathering” on Moscow’s outskirts and “retreated to their bases safely.”

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has wished all those injured in the Crocus City Hall terrorist attack a recovery and conveyed compliments to medical staff, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said.
 
“We together with [Russian Health Minister] Mikhail A. [Murashko] reported to the president on the state of health of patients, the president wished all a recovery and conveyed compliments to doctors,” she told reporters.
 
A terrorist attack was carried out at the Crocus City Hall music venue in the city of Krasnogorsk near Moscow on Friday evening. Unidentified gunmen armed with assault rifles went on a shooting spree. An explosion rocked the building, starting a fire. The special services are conducting a search operation. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin canceled all mass events in the capital in the next two days, and a number of other Russian regions followed suit.

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron “strongly condemns the terrorist attack claimed by the Islamic State” that left at least 60 people dead and over 100 injured in a Moscow concert hall on Friday, according to the Elysee Palace.

“France expresses its solidarity with the victims, their loved ones and all the Russian people,” the presidential office said.

“The images from Moscow tonight are horrifying. Our thoughts go to the victims and to those injured as well as to the Russian people. All effort has to be made to determine the causes of these heinous acts,” the French Foreign Ministry said on Friday on X, formerly Twitter. — NNN-AGENCIES
