TRIPOLI, March 18 (NNN-XINHUA) — Vice President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, on Sunday stressed the council’s support for the efforts by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to push forward the holding of national elections.
Al-Lafi made his remarks during a meeting with Abdoulaye Bathily, the special representative of the UN secretary-general for Libya and head of the UNSMIL, in the capital Tripoli, said a statement issued by the council.
“The meeting discussed the current political stalemate… and efforts to convene an inclusive national conference with the participation of all parties in the political process,” the statement said.
For his part, Bathily reiterated his support for the Presidential Council to achieve national reconciliation in the country, the statement said.
Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021 as previously scheduled, due to disagreements among the Libyan parties over election laws.
Ever since the fall of late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid escalating violence and unrest. — NNN-XINHUA
