MIAMI (US), March 17 (NNN-ANDINA) — The Peruvian capital Lima has become the official host city of the 2027 Pan American and Parapan American Games after prevailing over Asuncion in the election held after the Extraordinary General Assembly of Panam Sports in the US city of Miami.
This will be the second time that Peru will host the highest level sporting competition in the region after having previously done it in 2019.
Lima, with 28 votes, beat the Paraguayan capital, emerging as the winner of the election held virtually by the 40 members of the Pan American Sports Organization, Panam Sports, who saw the Peruvian capital as the best alternative.
Before moving on to the virtual voting procedure, the Extraordinary General Assembly of Panam Sports was held at the JW Marriott Hotel, ABC Room, in the city of Miami, United States, in which the President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee Renzo Manyari, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen, and Lima’s Mayor Rafael Lopez Aliaga made the official presentation of the Peruvian capital’s candidacy to the Panam Sports Executive Committee.
In the message, representatives from Lima assured that given that 95% of infrastructure is in place, through Legado, the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima may be held on any date agreed with participating countries, through their international federations.
In this regard, Peru proposed holding the Games in September.
Regarding some members’ doubt on whether a new Olympic village will be built, the COP head affirmed that five towers of 10 floors each will be built within the existing village to house athletes of the new disciplines to be included in the program.
There were 40 member countries with a total of 52 votes, as the Constitution provides that each country that has hosted the Pan American Games is entitled to two votes.
To ensure the transparency and success of the process, Panam Sports hired the services of renowned British company Lumi, an expert in virtual elections that has worked with the International Olympic Committee and International Federations.
Meanwhile in LIMA, Peruvian Pres Dina Boluarte inspected the sports venues National Sports Village (Videna) located in Lima’s San Luis district that will host the 2027 Pan American Games.
Joined by Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen at Videna, the Head of State toured the sports facilities that are used for training high-level athletes, such as the aquatic center, the athletics track, the velodrome, and rehabilitation centers, among others.
She was also accompanied by Special Legacy Project Executive Director Carlos Zegarra and Peruvian Olympic Committee President Renzo Manyari.
The dignitary noted that it would be a good idea to encourage sports participation of students from educational institutions and universities, within the framework of the Lima 2027 Pan American Games.
She also reiterated the Government’s support and commitment to the preparation of the sports facilities, with a view to the organization of the aforementioned Games. — NNN-ANDINA
