Tanzania to host 3rd blue economy conference

DAR ES SALAAM, March 16 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — South Korea, Ghana, and Sweden are among the countries expected to participate in the forthcoming 3rd Blue Economy Conference (BEC) to be hosted in Dar es Salaam from July 11 to 13, this year.

Dr. Tumaini Gurumo, Director of the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI), informed journalists in Dar es Salaam on Friday that the event is organized in collaboration with the Regional Maritime University of Ghana to advance the blue economy in Africa. The theme of the conference will focus on four main areas.

The event, expected to bring together stakeholders from academic institutions, banking and finance, shipping companies, and government institutions, will be heralded by the theme: ‘Navigating the Future: Integrating Maritime Safety and Security, Climate Change Actions, and Technological Advancements for the Blue Economy’.

“I would like to welcome Tanzanians, including Ministries responsible for the blue economy, education, and maritime stakeholders, to cooperate with DMI as preparations for the event are still underway,” said Dr. Tumaini.

According to Dr. Tumaini, almost 90 percent of international trade is enhanced through maritime transport. Hence, “there must be protection and security in the sea to ensure it runs smoothly and is flexible to adapt technological changes in the transport sector,” she added.

She thanked the sixth phase government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan for opening doors through economic diplomacy, which has become an important pillar for the success of the meeting. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
