MEXICO CITY, March 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mexican authorities announced they had successfully rescued 200 people, including children, crammed into the trunk of a truck in the city of Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila state, northern country.
Local police discovered the vehicle with the above suspicious signs during a security patrol around the area and asked to stop the vehicle for inspection. The two vehicle drivers are currently being detained for questioning.
Coahuila state authorities handed over the people in the trunk of the car to the National Institute of Migration (INM) for health checks and immigration status determination.
In early January 2024, Mexican officials also rescued 726 migrants, mainly from Central American countries, at a warehouse in Cuaxomulco urban area, central Tlaxcala state. Most of them are citizens of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua. In the group there were 75 unaccompanied minors, 108 women and 399 men.
Previously, in September 2023, Mexican police discovered and rescued 350 exhausted migrants locked in the trunk of a trailer after security staff at the toll booth in Cosamaloapan city, Veracruz state in the western region Nam, heard screaming for help and banged on the trunk door.
According to statistics from the Mexican Customs and Border Protection Agency, in the first 11 months of 2023, about 2.2 million migrants transited through Mexico to find their way to the US. — NNN-AGENCIES
