Peru: Government declares state of emergency due to rains

LIMA, March 6 (NNN-ANDINA) — The Council of Ministers has agreed to declare a state of emergency in various locations across the country due to the imminent threat and occurrence of rains, Minister Women Nancy Tolentino announced.

She said that the Council of Ministers agreed to declare the National Disaster Risk Management Council (CONAGERD) in permanent session to daily respond to immediate actions taken in the face of natural disasters.

“The three levels of government are working closely for coordination and joint response,” Tolentino said.

She said the Executive Branch agreed to extend the state of emergency in the southern Apurimac-Cusco-Arequipa road corridor, as well as in the province of Zarumilla (Tumbes region) to preserve domestic order and ensure the population’s constitutional rights.

She said that, at the Council of Ministers session, it was informed that the execution of public investment has increased, from January to date, by almost S/5.5 million (about US$1.45 million), which is equivalent to 61%, compared to the same period in 2023, at all levels of government.

The Cabinet member stated that the execution at the National Government increased by 43% compared to the previous year“[…] which reflects the achievement the Executive Branch is making in coordination with regional and local governments, to provide a better quality of life to citizens and revive our economy.”

Furthermore, Tolentino affirmed that the ministerial meeting also adopted decisions on a new tax collection policy, the appointment of ambassadors, and the activities to mark International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8. — NNN-ANDINA
