Russia will remain in the Outer Space Treaty: Deputy Foreign Minister

Moscow, Feb 24 (Prensa Latina) Russia is not considering the possibility of withdrawing from the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov declared.

“No, we are not considering (leaving it). It is one of the key components left within the system of international agreements, legal agreements and other types of instruments to regulate this area, which is decades-old,” Ryabkov told the Sputnik news agency.

In addition, the deputy minister noted that contacts with the United States regarding Washington’s accusations against Moscow of alleged plans to deploy nuclear weapons in space turned out to be unproductive.

According to Ryabkov, it is Washington which “has long pursued the line of creating superiority in outer space, including in the field of weapons.” “The Americans are using the issue for propaganda purposes, they are making accusations based on nothing, unsupported by the slightest evidence, this is their usual way,” he added.

“Furthermore, sensible representatives of the international community realized this long ago and simply cannot take American accusations of this nature seriously,” he said.

The ABC television network, earlier than US lawmakers, during a secret briefing, may have been briefed on Russia’s alleged plans to “deploy nuclear weapons in space” for use against satellites.

Moscow has already repeatedly noted that Russia, along with other countries, is in favor of avoiding an arms race in space and preserving it for peaceful purposes. –NNN-PRENSA LATINA
