Malaysia, Scotland Explore Collaboration In Space Industry

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 (Bernama) — Malaysia and Scotland had recently organised the ‘Malaysia-Scotland TechnoMart Programme’ to tap into potential collaboration in the space industry. 

The programme was jointly organised by Malaysia’s Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI) through the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) and the Malaysian Industry Group High Technology (MIGHT), and the Scottish Development International (SDI).

“It aims to build opportunities and explore industrial cooperation in the field of space between Malaysia and Scotland, which is fully supported by the United Kingdom,” Mosti said in a statement on Monday.

The programme also involved a workshop session focused on five main topics in space, namely Space Application, Space Operations, Space Manufacturing, Funding and Governance, and Academia, as well as business matching sessions.

According to MOSTI, the programme, held on Feb 13 to 14, had identified as many as nine projects that have great potential to be developed through strategic cooperation between the two countries.

They are development of satellite-based solutions in the fields of communications, agriculture and positioning, the provision of launch and operation services, as well as the research and development of satellite technology with academics.

Advanced manufacturing technology in space has also been identified as one of the potential strategic collaborations based on the availability of the electrical and electronics (E&E) industry in the country, according to the statement.

As many as 22 delegations from Scotland consisting of eight leading companies and two renowned universities had participated in the programme while participation from Malaysia involved 60 participants consisting of six government agencies, 12 companies, and 10 local universities.
