SINGAPORE, Feb 14 (NNN-XINHUA) – Singapore authority arrested 3,101 drug abusers last year, an increase of 10 percent from 2022, and more than half of the new abusers were below 30, according to an annual report released by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), today.
The number of new drug abusers arrested increased from 802 in 2022, to 944 in 2023, said the report, adding that, the youngest abusers arrested last year were five 14-year-olds.
The CNB said, it arrested 454 female abusers in 2023, an increase of 11 percent from 2022. The female accounted for 15 percent of all arrested drug abusers.
The report showed that, CNB officers seized drugs with a street value of more than 15 million Singapore dollars (11.1 million U.S. dollars). The most common drugs abused in the city-state last year were methamphetamine, heroin, and cannabis.
CNB Director, Sam Tee, noted that, the authority will be relentless in the fight against drugs and continue the preventive drug education programme.
The director also called on parents to support CNB’s efforts, and guide the young people, not to take drugs.– NNN-XINHUA
