BEIJING (China), Feb 11 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peru has been crowned as the “Cultural Tourism Destination of the Year” at the prestigious Voyage Awards 2023 held in China’s Beijing.

The recognition, given by the leading high-end travel magazine, Voyage, acknowledges Peru as one of the preferred destinations for elite Chinese travelers.

Competing with iconic destinations such as Australia, Spain, Jordan, Ireland, and Croatia, among others, Peru stood out as a unique choice captivating travelers with its rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes.

The ceremony also brought together prominent figures from the travel sector, as well as notable media, celebrities, and influencers from the Asian market.

The selection of winners involved the participation of tourism professionals, high-level journalists, writers, and other industry experts.

It is important to mention that in December 2023, the Voyage magazine was invited to visit the South American country by the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (PromPeru). This trip also featured the participation of the renowned Chinese actor Xia Yu, selected as the Ambassador of Sustainable Tourism.

The acclaimed artist was able to explore the enigmatic Inca culture and firsthand experience the wonders of Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca.

In his own words, Xia Yu expressed: “In Peru, we discovered the traditional way of life preserved by the local population and had a profound experience of the Andes, where the Incas lived.”

The trip organized by PromPeru covered the cities of Lima, Cusco, and Puno, where he enjoyed the local cuisine and Pisco.

Peru has a remarkable track record of recognition in China, establishing itself as an exceptional tourist destination.
In May 2019, the country was awarded the “Best International Tourism Digital Marketing Campaign” by COTRI & Ctrip Award, taking home the coveted Gold Award (1st place).

The same year, it was distinguished as the “Best Gastronomic Destination” in the Voyage Awards, solidifying its status for culinary enthusiasts.

The success continued in August 2019 when Peru received the Most Promising Outbound Destination Award” from Sina Weibo, highlighting its emerging appeal. In May 2023, it once again won the award in the “Media-Internet” category from COTRI, securing the top spot.

The Chinese market, which before the pandemic held the title of the largest emitter of travelers globally, seems to be on track to reclaim that position.

According to PromPeru’s tourism intelligence service, Turismo In, this is evident not only in that 80% of Chinese people indicate missing the experience of traveling internationally but also in the intention of over 50% of the population to plan vacations abroad.

Moreover, 58% of Chinese tourists plan to enjoy their destination as a local would, and 60% of them prioritize nature contact in their travel. — NNN-ANDINA
