NEW DELHI, Feb 9 (NNN-PTI) – One person was killed and five others were injured yesterday, after a portion of a metro rail station collapsed in the Indian capital city of New Delhi, officials said.
The metro station collapsed at Gokulpuri on the Pink Line.
According to officials, the boundary wall of the elevated platform fell on the road below.
The deceased has been identified as 53-year-old Vinod Kumar, a local resident. Police said, Kumar was on his scooter when he came under the debris of the collapsed wall of the elevated station platform.
Reports said, four two-wheelers were also buried under the debris.
“In an incident at the Gokulpuri Metro station on Pink Line, a portion of the station wall towards Up Platform fell onto the road, injuring five persons,” an official of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said. “They were immediately sent to the nearest hospital for medical attention.”
The DMRC has suspended two officials, a manager and a junior engineer, from the Civil department, pending enquiry. It has also ordered a probe into the incident.
“As an abundant safety precaution, train services on the small stretch from Maujpur to Shiv Vihar are being run on single line, to attend to the fallen portion towards Up platform on Gokulpuri station, which has also been temporarily closed,” the DMRC said.
The DMRC announced a compensation of 2.5 million rupees (30,125 U.S. dollars) to the next of kin of the deceased, 6,025 dollars for the grievously injured, and 1,205 dollars for persons with minor injuries.– NNN-PTI
