MANILA, Feb 9 (NNN-PNA) – The death toll in the massive landslide that crashed into villages in Davao de Oro province, in the southern Philippines, has climbed to 11, with 110 others remaining missing, provincial authorities said, yesterday.
The Davao de Oro provincial government said, the landslide, which occurred Tuesday night, near a mining site in Maco town, injured 31 villagers.
Rescuers from the Maco municipal disaster prevention agency and nearby areas, shifted to search and retrieval operations, to find the reported missing villagers, buried under tonnes of mud, rocks and trees, that rolled down from a mountainside.
The missing people include passengers of two buses, ferrying miners, and people in several houses in the path of the rampaging mud.
Local authorities said, the rain-induced landslide has displaced at least 1,166 families. The displaced villagers are temporarily staying in government evacuation centres.– NNN-PNA
