IAIS Malaysia applauds ICJ ruling in Israel genocide case, regrets no ceasefire order

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 (NNN-Bernama) — The International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia commended the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its interim ruling on Friday regarding the genocide case initiated by South Africa against Israel.

Its Chairman Prof Dr Maszlee Malik in a statement said this historic ruling was a major breakthrough for the Palestinian cause and a testament to the ICJ’s role as the guardian of international law and human rights.

“The Institute salutes the ICJ for its courage and integrity in addressing the grave allegations of genocide against Israel, which has subjected the Palestinian people to decades of oppression, occupation, and violence,” the statement read.

However, he said IAIS Malaysia regretted that the ICJ did not order a full ceasefire, which was essential to end the violence and suffering in Gaza.

“The institute is puzzled as to why the court did not take this step, because of its implications for the humanitarian situation and the resolution of the conflict,” said Maszlee.

In its ruling on Friday, the ICJ ordered Israel to implement six interim measures, including preventing genocide in Gaza, ensuring that its forces no longer commit any acts of genocide, and preventing and punishing any incitement to genocide.

Israel was also ordered to allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza; prevent the destruction and ensure the preservation of evidence related to genocide; and submit a report to the ICJ on all steps taken in implementing the order within a month.

Maszlee said IAIS Malaysia also urged the World Court to follow up with a full and final judgment on the merits of the case.

The institute called on the ICJ to issue a definitive and comprehensive ruling that will hold Israel accountable for its crimes and ensure justice and reparations for the victims, he added.

Moreover, Maszlee said IAIS Malaysia emphasises the need for effective implementation and enforcement of the ICJ’s decisions, which were legally binding and mandatory for all parties.

“The institute calls on Israel to respect and comply with the court’s directives, warning that any defiance or obstruction will have serious consequences for its international standing and relations,” he said.

The institute also urged the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council, to support and reinforce the ICJ’s decisions, and to take concrete actions and sanctions against Israel for any non-compliance.
