New Zealand Saw Record Annual Migrant Arrivals, Departures

WELLINGTON, Jan 19 (NNN-RNZ) – New Zealand saw 249,500 migrant arrivals and 122,100 migrant departures, in the one year to Nov, 2023, the highest on record for an annual period, the statistics department Stats NZ said, today.

The migrant arrivals were up 135 percent and the migrant departures were up 29 percent in the Nov, 2023, year, compared with a year earlier, Stats NZ said.

Citizens of India, the Philippines, China, Fiji, and South Africa drove net migration gains in the Nov, 2023 year, it said.

The net migration loss of 44,500 New Zealand citizens, in the cited period, is provisionally a new annual record, narrowly exceeding the previous record of 44,400, in the Feb, 2012 year, statistics show.

Migrants are people changing their country of residence, regardless of their country of citizenship or visa status. A 12-month threshold is used to classify migrants from non-migrants, aligned with international guidelines on measuring migration.– NNN-RNZ
