Over 60 Inmates Escape From Sri Lanka’s Rehabilitation Centre Amid Clash

COLOMBO, Jan 13 (NNN-XINHUA) — Over 60 inmates have escaped the state-run Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in North Central Province, in Sri Lanka last night, said Commissioner General of Rehabilitation, Darshana Hettiarachchi.

Hettiarachchi told the media that, the inmates had escaped amid a clash between two groups of recovering addicts, and at least 19 have been injured during the clash.

He said, law enforcement officials, along with the military, are trying to locate and apprehend the escaped individuals, adding that, some escapees have already been apprehended.

In Dec, 2023, over 130 inmates escaped the facility, and it also occurred during a clash between two groups.– NNN-XINHUA
