BERLIN, May 17 (NNN-PRESNA LATINA) – The President of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, stated today that only the joint efforts of the countries participating in the nuclear pact with Iran can save the agreement.
‘If the situation reached such a threatening point of a military conflict, the European troika, the European Union (EU), China and of course Russia, have an opportunity to do a joint diplomacy,’ said Ischinger, who pointed out that the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (PAIC) ‘is not dead yet’.
He also said that before the confrontation with the United States it will not be possible to preserve the agreement separately, ‘but I imagine it would be possible within the framework of a large agreement with the participation of China and Russia.’
In 2015, the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, China and Iran signed the PAIC, which established limitations to the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against that country.
On May 8, US President Donald Trump reported the withdrawal of his country from the nuclear agreement and the resumption of sanctions against Iran under the pact.
Subsequently, the National Security Council of Iran reported the partial suspension of the PAIC, one year after the withdrawal of the United States from the treaty.
The president of Iran, Hasan Rohaní, declared that the partial cessation of PAIC commitments does not end the agreement.
In addition, Rohani offered a period of 60 days to the member countries of the pact to hold a negotiating dialogue.
The EU expressed its commitment to preserve and fully comply with the PAIC in a joint statement released by the heads of European diplomacy and the high representative for Foreign Affairs of the bloc, Federica Mogherini.
