Extreme Weather Caused Flooding, Landslides In Bandung

JAKARTA, Jan 13 (NNN-ANTARA) – Flooding, landslide, and uprooted trees hit Bandung and its surrounding areas, due to extreme weather on Thursday.

“Medium to heavy rain, with lightning and strong winds are estimated for the next three days,” said head of the climatology station of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of West Java, Rakhmat Prasetia, yesterday.

The downpour occurred in the afternoon to the evening, in parts of Bandung Regency, Bandung City, West Bandung, Sumedang, Garut, Subang, Indramayu, and Karawang.

In Bandung, heavy rain poured over the city until Thursday evening, causing an overflow of the Cikapundung River. The muddy flooding swept over and swamped houses and roads in Padasuka, a residential area, at Jalan Braga.

Meanwhile in Dago, a residential house was damaged by a landslide, sweeping over its kitchen and the middle area of the house, in the middle of the night. The Regional Disaster Management Agency, BPBD, also reported a downpour in Cipamengpeuk Village, South Sumedang, causing a landslide. Heavy rain is also reported in Cijambe and Balingbing Villages in Subang.

Flooding is reported in Terisi District, Indramayu, swamping Cikawung-Wado Street, reaching 60 to 70 centimetres deep. 

A landslide cuts off access in Bungbulang District, Garut. Meanwhile, heavy flooding was recorded in Sunten Jaya Village, Lembang. As well as, flooding in the Bojongsoang area, Cikembang, and Sukapura Villages in Bandung Regency.

Concerning the extreme weather, Rakhmat Prasetia warned residents and related institutions, to remain vigilant of hydrometeorological disasters, such as heavy to extreme rain that will potentially cause flooding, landslides, uprooted trees, and others.– NNN-ANTARA
