UNITED NATIONS, Jan 12 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The United Nations Security Council will review compliance and peace progress in Colombia during a meeting with representatives of Gustavo Petro’s Government and the Verification Mission in the country.
The achievements of the Mission from September to December 2023 will also be analyzed.
The body will listen to the letters sent by the permanent representation of Colombia to the UN and the report of the Secretary General, António Guterres, whom recognizes the determination of the current Executive to consolidate peace.
Guterres’ latest report salutes the progress made in implementing the 2016 Final Agreement and the importance of dialogue initiatives to resolve conflicts. It also celebrates the completion of key planning and design points such as the Comprehensive Rural Reform and the reincorporation process.
The document was prepared by the Verification Mission and recognizes Rural Reform as one of the Government’s main priorities and highlights the new regulations to expedite access to land and the considerable increase in the budget.
According to the report, released this week, almost 80 percent of ex-combatants participate in 5,691 productive projects (68 percent of which are individual), as well as the purchase by the Government of 4,725 hectares of land for ex-combatants.
The report ensures that the Government’s dialogues with armed groups contributed to the improvement of some indicators in specific places, such as the de-escalation of the conflict during the first ten months of 2023, which conveyed to a decrease in attacks against the Public Force, clashes and dead and wounded civilians.
However, the violence of armed and criminal groups seriously impacts communities and undermines implementation efforts, while crimes linked to economic dynamics and social and territorial control still persist or has increased, it reveals. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
