LJUBLJANA, Jan 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Slovenian media reported that five people were trapped in a cave in the southwest of the country after heavy rains caused rising water levels, hindering rescue workers’ efforts to get this group of people out safely.

The group of people trapped in Krizna cave – a family of 3 and 2 tour guides – have reportedly found a safe shelter. The cave system is about 8 km long and the only way to explore is by boat.

STA news agency quoted a Slovenian civil protection agency official as saying that on the evening of Jan 6, rescue forces sought to reach and provide food, water and a tent to keep warm for this group of people.

However, because the group was trapped more than 2 km from the cave entrance, another team of divers needed to be mobilized to assist. It was expected that it would take 3-4 hours of diving to reach the trapped people.

Rescue and rescue efforts depend on when the water recedes, possibly on the night of Jan 7, but the possibility of lasting several days cannot be ruled out.

Krizna is a cave system connecting underground lakes, with emerald green water highlights that are very attractive to tourists in Slovenia. In terms of biodiversity, this is the 4th largest known cave ecosystem in the world. — NNN-AGENCIES
