MONROVIA, Dec 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Liberian officials announced that the number of people killed in the Tuesday gasoline tanker explosion in Bong district, central region of the country had reached at least 40 people.
Health officials said many people are still hospitalized with severe burns and predict that the number of deaths may increase in the near future.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of the Liberia National Police – B. Mulbah said that authorities are having difficulty identifying the victims after the explosion.
On Dec 26, a gasoline tanker lost control in a traffic accident and crashed into a ditch along Totota Road in Bong District. According to police, local people rushed to the car after the accident to get fuel. The tanker then exploded, causing many casualties.
According to United Nations data, low road safety and poor infrastructure are the reasons why countries in the Sahara desert region of Africa become the place with the most deadly accidents in the world. The mortality rate is three times higher than the European average. — NNN-AGENCIES
